At first, much of the growth of Buenos Aires was in illicit trade, as all official trade with Spain had to go through Lima. Boom Buenos Aires was established on the banks of the Rà ­o de la Plata (Platte River), which translates to River of Silver. It was given this optimistic name by early explorers and settlers, who had gotten some silver trinkets from local Indians. The river didnt produce much in the way of silver, and settlers didnt find the true value of the river until much later. In the eighteenth century, cattle ranching in the vast grasslands around Buenos Aires became very lucrative, and millions of treated leather hides were sent to Europe, where they became leather armor, shoes, clothing and a variety of other products. Independence The British invasions had a secondary effect on the city. During the invasions, Spain had essentially left the city to its fate, and it had been the citizens of Buenos Aires who had taken up arms and defended their city. When Spain was invaded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808, the people of Buenos Aires decided they had seen enough of Spanish rule, and in 1810 they established an independent government, although formal Independence would not come until 1816. The fight for Argentine Independence, led by Josà © de San Martà ­n, was largely fought elsewhere and Buenos Aires did not suffer terribly during the conflict. Unitarians and Federalists When the charismatic San Martà ­n went into self-imposed exile in Europe, there was a power vacuum in the new nation of Argentina. Before long, a bloody conflict hit the streets of Buenos Aires. The country was divided between Unitarians, who favored a strong central government in Buenos Aires, and Federalists, who preferred near-autonomy for the provinces. Predictably, the Unitarians were mostly from Buenos Aires, and the Federalists were from the provinces. In 1829, Federalist strongman Juan Manuel de Rosas seized power, and those Unitarians who did not flee were persecuted by Latin Americas first secret police, the Mazorca. Immigration in the Early 20th Century As the city industrialized in the early 20th century, it opened its doors to immigrants, mostly from Europe. Large numbers of Spanish and Italians came, and their influence is still strong in the city. There were also Welsh, British, Germans, and Jews, many of whom passed through Buenos Aires on their way to establish settlements in the interior. Many more Spanish arrived during and shortly after the  Spanish Civil War  (1936 to 1939). The Perà ³n regime (1946 to 1955) allowed  Nazi war criminals  to migrate to Argentina, including the infamous Dr. Mengele, although they did not come in large enough numbers to significantly change the nations demographics. Recently, Argentina has seen migration from Korea, China, Eastern Europe and other parts of Latin America. Argentina has celebrated Immigrants Day on September 4 since 1949. The Perà ³n Years Juan Perà ³n  and his famous wife  Evita  came to power in the early 1940s, and he reached the presidency in 1946. Perà ³n was a very strong leader, blurring the lines between elected president and dictator. Unlike many strongmen, however, Perà ³n was a liberal who strengthened unions (but kept them under control) and improved education. The working class adored him and Evita, who opened schools and clinics and gave state money away to the poor. Even after he was deposed in 1955 and forced into exile, he remained a powerful force in Argentine politics. He even triumphantly returned to stand for the 1973 elections, which he won, although he died of a heart attack after about a year in power. The Bombing of the Plaza de Mayo On June 16, 1955, Buenos Aires saw one of its darkest days. Anti-Perà ³n forces in the military, seeking to dislodge him from power, ordered the Argentine Navy to bombard the Plaza de Mayo, the citys central square. It was believed that this act would precede a general coup dà ©tat. Navy aircraft bombed and strafed the square for hours, killing 364 people and injuring hundreds more. The Plaza had been targeted because it was a gathering place for pro-Perà ³n citizens. The army and air force did not join in the attack, and the coup attempt failed. Perà ³n was removed from power about three months later by another revolt which included all of the armed forces. Ideological conflict in the 1970s During the early 1970s, communist rebels taking their cue from  Fidel Castros  takeover of Cuba attempted to stir up revolts in several Latin American nations, including Argentina. They were countered by right-wing groups who were just as destructive. The Health Risks of Smoking Every year nearly one in every five US deaths are related to cigarette smoking, that means that every year 440,000 people alone die from cigarettes. Deaths caused by alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide, and illegal drugs combined are actually less than the number of deaths caused by cigarette smoking. Being the grandchild of a grandpa who died of lung cancer from smoking, I know and understand what cigarette smoking can do. Tobacco smoke is a mixture of gases and of small particles made up of water, tar, and nicotine. The tar is a mixture of thousands of toxic chemicals, many of which are known to cause cancer. Many of the gases in tobacco smoke are harmful to the human body. These include†¦show more content†¦During smoking, nicotine is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream and travels to the brain in a matter of seconds. As you can see there are many harmful toxins, gases, and carcinogens in cigarettes that cause humans to attain many harmful and fatal diseases. Smoking is a major cause of heart disease, bronchitis, emphysema, stroke, and contributes to the severity of pneumonia. But most of all it causes many types of cancers. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women, and is one of the most difficult cancers to treat. It is very hard to detect when it is in the earliest, most treatable stage. Fortunately, lung cancer is largely a preventable disease. About 87 percent of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. Based on data collected from 1995 to 1999, the CDC estimated that adult male smokers lose an average of 13.2 years of life and female smokers lose 14.5 years of life because of smoking. Tobacco also has a damaging affect on a womens reproductive health. Smoking during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, and death or illness of the child in early infancy. It may also affect the physical growth, mental development and behavior of children until at least the age of 11 years. The varieties of features are added in this novel for making it more realistic and appropriate to the 19th century novels. The mixture of the real scenario with the essence of romanticism was quite a unique feature of the novel presented by Jane Austin (England 2016). The major plot discussed in this novel is mostly signifying the essence of romance where the hero comes out and makes the heroin free from the casement. Mr. Darcy is portrayed as an idealized hero, who tears apart the social bondage and frees his heroin after fighting with the villains or captors. Simultaneously, in order to free Elizabeth from such social bondage, he fights with Lady Catherine and his sisters as well (Beijerinck 2014). The reflection on the social reality for the 18th century woman is always fantasized with the care of a man. Hence, the young woman has to stay at her fathers place before she moves to her husbands place. Women did not have the right to inherit or own the property. They even had few opportunities to earn money independently (Deutsch, Lawrence and Henneberger 2014). In this particular novel, the social reality of the Bennett sisters has been portrayed more prominently. They do not have to the choice regarding marriage due to which they tend to marry a person for being financially secured. The realistic approaches in this novel are contributing to the romantic appeals as well. The entire novel is completely focusing on Elizabeth Bennett, who possesses the romantic and individualistic ideologies (Baker 2014). Her relationship with Mr. Darcy is somewhat facing clashes due to the high class and gender discriminations. The influence of the social classes on their relationships is also much highlighted in this novel. It has been noted that in the novel, Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy belongs to the upper class society that has the power over the other society people. The prominent aristocracy is reflected from Mr. Darcys character. He had the connections to Lady Catherine, another aristocrat, high society woman. On the other hand, Elizabeth Bennett is representing the 18th century woman who has to survive through the reality (Chang 2014). The novel depicts the clear picture of the social world, which is laden and stratified with the struggle and pretentions of the social class. Darcy, at the initial stage, took no interest on Elizabeth Bennett since she belongs to a middle class society. However, after several courses of interactions, he finds the honest and lively mind of Miss Bennett (Deutsch, Lawrence and Henneberger 2014). In fact, Elizabeth also disdains Mr. Darcy since he is superior to her. However, their romantic relationships are influenced by the social reality of class and gender discriminations. The situation is dreadful in case of Miss Bennett has to struggle through the perception that the unmarried woman of her society can only be a tutor or a governess. However, the feminist attitudes of Elizabeth Bennett have helped her to survive through such typical mindsets surrounding the society of 18th Century. She has her individualism that does not allow her to bow for surviving through economic strength. Therefore, she turns down the proposal of Mr. Darcy at the initial stage (Deutsch, Lawrence and Henneberger 2014). She believes in marrying for love and not for money. The novel clearly breaks down the pride of Darcy with the humor, intelligence, and individualism of Elizabeth Bennett (Herrera and Kraus 2016). The novel is thus generally identifies the highly stratified society, which is segregated by the recognizable social class in 18th century. The novel is sometimes presented as the critique representative of 18th century society in England where the women marry for their survival. In fact, there is the clean and high level of social class snobbery and social pretensions. Such gender and social class discrimination has influenced the growing relationship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett. However, it still determines the growing love between these two people who belong to the different social classes.
